For lovers of sports and adventure, the Algarve is the perfect destination that provides wonderful moments, including water sports, land sports and air sports. The offer is quite varied.
Praia da Rocha has many tourist attractions and numerous possibilities to enjoy your free time during your holiday, and is ideal for water sports. In the towns of Alvor, Ferragudo, Albufeira, Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago you can do windsurfing, waterskiing and jet skiing, even in the winter. If you choose to go surfing and bodyboarding some beaches of Portimão, Lagos and Vila do Bispo have schools where you can sign up and start practicing as well as rent equipment. Those who like to feel the adrenaline can choose sport fishing on the high seas along the coast between Praia da Rocha, Lagos and Sagres. The waters of Quarteira, Lagoa and Sagres are great for scuba diving.
Going down the river in a canoe, may be another option, facing the water unevenness and constant currents, is an adventure for the most fearless. Alcoutim is a good place to embark on the Guadiana river and start a journey through the picturesque towns of Guerreiros do Rio and Castro Marim, until you come to the town of Vila Real de Santo António or, for the more daring, to the village of Cacela-a-Velha, where the sunset is the most beautiful in the Algarve. The more contemplative can choose one of the boat trips from the Marina of Portimão to discover deserted beaches in the natural reserve of Ria Formosa or have nice walks around the marina.
If you prefer trail sports, the Algarve has several proposals for mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and safaris. The safaris run through the stunning hills, magnificent landscapes in tours that include tastings of regional cuisine prepared in a traditional way and always appetizing.
On a calmer note, the bicycle rides in the village of Alcoutim or pedestrian walks are organized in the Monchique forest or on the hillside of the Serra do Caldeirão, enable the discovery of another Algarve where you can share unique moments with nature, listen to the silence in-between singing birds, fill your lungs with fresh air and the soul with tranquility.
Horseback riding is another sport practiced throughout the year in the Algarve and in different locations, such as the parish of Estói, near Faro, so that the more experienced can choose this path to explore the most remote places of the hills. If you imagine something different, for lovers of climbing and abseiling, the proposal will be to face the challenge of climbing the highest peak Cerro de S. Miguel in the parish of Moncarapacho, or climb the hill Rocha da Pena, near the town of Salir. Those who prefer to move strategically between the ravines of the hills, can always arrange a game of paintball in the town of S. Brás de Alportel.
If you prefer a purely radical adventure you can practice a paragliding, which can be done taking advantage of the winds of the west Algarvian coast Costa Vicentina, a unique opportunity to behold the majesty of the blue sea. Or to do parasailing and take microlight flights in the towns of Albufeira or Quinta do Lago, on the coast of Loulé municipality.
If you prefer something quieter, balloon rides give a unique panoramic view over the Algarvian countryside.
